History of the Mercury Capri
It is safe to say the Mercury Capri can best be summed as a “sporty" convertible. The Italians designed the car, and the Australians built it, with Japanese parts. The Ford/Mercury Capri was born because Ford of Australia (APAO) had an interest in building an export vehicle. All Capri’s were meant to be convertibles, with an optional removable hardtop. Capri’s were manufactured from 1989-1994 and sold only in Australia & the United States.
There were two models, the base version, and the upgraded turbo charged XR2. We at convertibletopsplus.com carry both models so if you have the turbo charged XR2 or the base model, we have your top.
In late 1990 the Capri was introduced to the American public. Ford hoped a Sporty convertible would encourage the younger, female consumer into Mercury dealerships. Since the customer base was primarily older males, the Capri would bring in the younger crowd.
This was not the case. The Capri was not an immediate sales success. Only 21,000 were actually sold in the first year of U.S. production. The Capri suffered from quality problems, vehicle recalls, and poor marketing support.
Ford halted production of the Capri after the 1994 production year. The Capri failed to meet its marketing goals and it was believed that the future demand for two seat convertibles was on the decline. The last Capri rolled off the production line on May 19th 1994. Ford held on to this last Capri, and it is on display at the Ford Discovery Centre, in Geelong Australia.
